The Morley WI, later named Rhubarb and Custard, was formed in July 2015 by Rachael Kennedy who is the current President. After speaking to various women in the community, she felt there was a need for a branch of the WI for like-minded women in this area. Indeed there was, as it now has a current membership of over 100 ladies!
Since its formation Rhubarb and Custard has enabled its members to participate in a variety of activities, from Salsa dancing to producing stained glass. There have been numerous informative talks including beauty advice, learning how to boost self confidence and increasing awareness of Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia.
Rhubarb and Custard has also raised money for a variety of charities, which include the British Legion, Bloodwise and Brain Tumour Research & Support. Money for the latter was raised due the production of an alternative calendar, rather like the one produced by the original “Calendar Girls”. For this, 36 brave members of Rhubarb and Custard ‘bared all’ and raised over £10 000.
Lots more interesting activities, talks and trips have been arranged for the coming year. So if you are a woman, aged over 18, wish to form new friendships and have some fun…then come and join us!!
- Rhubarb and Custard meets every second Tuesday in the month from 7:30 – 9:00pm (except August) at the Morley Town Hall.
- Some of the members have formed a sub-group called ‘Craft and Chat’. Meetings are held on the last Thursday of the month at Onwards and Upwards, Queen Street, Morley from 11:00am – 12:00 noon. Craft and Chat is still part of Rhubarb and Custard but some of the ladies purposely set up this sub-group primarily for those who don’t wish to meet up on a night and prefer to do so during the day. Members of Rhubarb and Custard can attend both the Tuesday and Thursday meetings if they wish.
